The Center Theatre Group Apprenticeship Program is a paid opportunity for people with no background in professional theatre to get hands-on training in Technical Production and Artistic careers.
Apprentices will shadow one or more theatre professionals, and will get the opportunity to not only sit in on the production process, but also to learn and practice skills necessary to work in these fields. As soon as we have more information about when we will be able to return to normal operations, we will update this page and send a message to educator partners, and to colleges and universities using Handshake.

These apprenticeships are fulltime, full-season commitments. Responsibilities will include serving as an assistant to the director on select mainstage productions, script reading and coverage, and conducting research. The apprenticeship offers experience and training in the day-to-day producing activities of a regional theater, and provides the opportunity to learn about the planning and producing of a season that includes mainstage shows and an active pipeline for new work.
Producing tasks may include but are not limited to : filling key positions for the McCarter LAB series of workshops and readings, assisting with auditions, and supporting the artistic department with scheduling and communication among artists, agents and industry colleagues.

This apprenticeship provides experience in all facets of educational programs, including assisting teaching artists in classes and workshops for learners of all ages pre-K through Senior Citizenassisting with in-school residencies, working with community partners to offer equitable access to arts education, lead-teaching select workshops and classes, supporting and coordinating the Student Matinee Series, creating theatre series resource guides for teachers, working with education and engagement staff to create new programs, and supporting the day-to-day work of the education office, including administrative support for all on-site after school programs.

The Literary Apprenticeship provides experience in the fields of new play development, producing, literary management, dramaturgy, and audience engagement.

This apprenticeship offers experience and training in audience and community engagement—the practice of enhancing and deepening the impact of the arts experience for the audience, and engaging with the greater community beyond the doors of the theater. Tasks include assisting with design, curation, promotion, and facilitation of public events connected to plays in the season— including the coordination of the pre-show contextual program—and to the community play reading program; assisting the literary office with public-facing written content; occasional facilitation of supporting new play workshops and readings.
The Artistic Engagement Apprentice also serves as a member of the casting team for community members and children for our annual production of A Christmas Carol mainstage production, and works closely with engagement, education, and producing staff to create and maintain the pre-show public engagement for that production.
The opportunity to hone facilitation skills by assisting teaching artists in youth programs is also available to interested candidates. This writing sample should be pages of writing for a general audience: program notes, reviews or features for a newspaper, etc. Excerpted academic papers are acceptable, as long as pieces are written for a general audience.

The Artistic Summer Internship provides the opportunity to observe and participate in the day-to-day artistic activities of a regional theater and gain experience in the fields of casting, producing, and artistic administration. The Artistic Summer Intern works jointly in the producing and artistic director's offices supporting the activities of the artistic staff. Dates are flexible, but in general the internship runs from late June approx.
